About the game

The scenic island railway that traverses the hills of Rügen between Stralsund and Sassnitz has arrived for Train Simulator. Description

Train Simulator now features the breathtaking, island railway that snakes its way across Rugen's rolling hills between Stralsund and Sassnitz.

Iron rails were rapidly spreading throughout Germany in the 1860s, particularly those belonging to Angermunde-Stralsund railway - built to decrease journey times between Sweden and northern Germany - however an opportunity arose wherein rails could even come closer to Rugen Island which borders Baltic waters.

At first, a railway was only constructed on Rugen soil beginning in 1883 and initially extended only as far as Bergen auf Rugen for purposes of testing before expanding further 8 years later. Later still, Sassnitz on its northern coast became accessible via this line which used ferry crossings across Strelasund to connect back with mainland.

Traffic was steadily expanding between Germany and Sweden as they came closer together. Mail would cross borders more quickly via Rugen than ever before, leading to the establishment of a railway ferry between them to bring them even closer together. Following its success, greater connections to mainland were required, leading to construction of bridges over Strelasund in 1930s.

Sassnitz and Sweden weren't the only towns enriched by an island railway - Binz, located nearby along its single track branch line from Lietzow also became served and now plays an equally significant part of every train's schedule.

Rugen has evolved since electrification and the fall of the iron curtain into something of a holiday destination; those familiar with its Baltic coastline often refer to it as being like "Brighton for Berliners," making an unforgettable summer rail journey!
