Description

Train Simulator introduces one of Germany's most strategically important railway lines - The Rhine Railway - complete with one of Europe's largest freight marshalling yards and its splendours.

The Rhine Railway opened between Mannheim and Rastatt via Karlsruhe in 1870 as an alternative route for Baden Mainline travellers. At first it ran between Graben-Neudor and Karlsruhe before changing course further west before finally taking its current path through Hardt. S1 and S11 lines of Karlsruhe Stadtbahn now use parts of this railway as part of their respective services.

In 1895, a current route from Karlsruhe to Rastatt was inaugurated, passing entirely within the Upper Rhine Plain with no major engineering structures along its course - similar to its parallel with Rhine Valley Railway which runs between Mannheim to Hiedelberg via Karlsruhe Rastatt Offenburg Basel (and nearly parallel).

Over its history, this railway has undergone many modifications over time and been altered and extended during both World Wars. Most notably, electrification occurred during this time and later several stations such as Altrip were abandoned following river straightening; now all connected.

Today's long distance trains consist of electric locomotives accompanied by Intercity passenger coaches as well as high-speed trains such as ICE or TGV; Regional-Express services comprised of S-Bahn electric multiple units also travel the route in either direction.

One prominent landmark on the route is Mannheim Rangierbahnof, one of Europe's largest freight marshalling yards stretching six km and covering 200 acres and also serving as an important freight exchange in Southern Rhine Valley.

Train Simulator's 50 mile (80 kilometre) section from Mannheim to Karlsruhe of The Rhine Railway recreates this busy route as seen today and features commuter, high speed and freight lines which see constant daily activity.

It also features passenger and freight locomotives and trains such as the DB BR 406 ICE 3M, DB BR 189, 425 and 294 with associated freight wagons for simulation purposes. Seven scenarios have also been designed into this route simulation: Night Container Replacement in Rheinau; Schwetzingen Freight Transport and Karlsruhe Commute, Refreezing of Ice in Mannheim Bound respectively.
Southbound to Karlsruhe More scenarios can now be found online and in-game through Steam Workshop! Train Simulator's Steam Workshop scenarios are free and simple to download - providing hours more of engaging gameplay for players like yourself! With new scenarios being released every day, why don't you give this form of creative expression a try now!?

Mannheim Rangierbahnhof, one of Europe's largest freight marshalling yards. Wurzburg-Walldorf is another great freight marshalling yard - here DB have used one BR 406 ICE 3M in their livery (DB Red), alongside four additional models (DB BR 189) in Red livery for Quick Drive use (with scenarios). Also this route - Quick Drive compatible.
