The Outlast Trials

Red Barrels is inviting you to experience mind-numbing horror, but this time in the company of friends. If you can survive the tests and finish the therapy with your team or alone, Murkoff is happy to let you go... but are you the same person?

SYNOPSIS

In the Cold War era, the Murkoff Corporation recruits human guinea-pigs to help them test new methods of mind control and brainwashing. Your morals, endurance, and sanity will be tested in a world filled with distrust, violence, and fear. It's all in the name progress, science and profit.

SURVIVE SOLO OR COOP

All of you are trapped in the Murkoff facility. The trials can be completed by one player or a group of two, three or four players.
Cooping is not mandatory, but it can have many benefits.
It doesn't matter how many players are in your group, the goal is to survive and get out.

You must complete Murkoff’s treatment to earn the right of re-entry into society. To do this, you will need to complete both the Trials as well as the MK Challenges.
The trials are story-driven therapies with an immersive experience that takes a set amount of time. Mk-Challenges is a shorter therapy that takes place in redesigned or modified sections of an existing map.

FLIGHT OR HIDE

Outlast's core gameplay is based on avoiding enemy fire, trying to hide from them and running away. Murkoff provides tools that you can utilize to improve your stealth abilities, to create escape opportunities, to slow down enemy movement, and much more. You will need to work hard and earn these tools.
You can use the tools to create a variety of different types.

• Stun enemies
• Blindness
• You can see through the walls
• You and those around you can heal.

Murkoff asks you to complete disturbing tasks during each trial or MK-challenge. You will only be allowed to leave the Trials and MK Challenges after you have completed these tasks.

INVESTIGATE

The Murkoff Corporation has abducted you to subject you to unethical tests that will alter your behavior and psyche throughout the Trials.
Gather documents that prove Murkoff’s negligence towards its patients.
Process

• Murkoff's Break the Self aims at destroying the fundamental beliefs of the subject. The self-identity is attacked in a systematic way. The goal of boot camp, or indoctrination is to make a person purge their mind and soul from anything taboo or sacred, that limits behavior. Constant assaults on their identity, guilt and betrayal lead to their eventual breakdown.
• The principle of Build Yourself is a good cop/bad cop one. In the absence of an old ideology, the introduction of a new one is possible. The new ideology is the opposite of the previous one, and this creates a powerful attraction as people flee the former in search of something different. The new ideologies are portrayed to be harmonious and perfectly suited for the individual's requirements. This accelerates the progress. Pain and punishment are replaced by calm and collegiality. At the moment when the victim is about to lose their self-esteem, they receive a little kindness.
• Salvation - Faced with a stark contrast between the painful past and the bright future of the new ideologies, the individual sheds all loyalty to the previous ideology. They confess any deep secrets they may still have, taking on the mantle for the new ideology. Many have described this as feeling like rebirth. This may include rites as the individual is cemented and accepted into the new system. Rituals include strong declarations by the individual that they accept the new ideology completely and fully, as well as swearing loyalty to the leaders. The solemn saluting of flags, the kissing of other artifacts, and other symbolisms will help them to firmly anchor themselves in their new environment.
